Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course

Background

The Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course has been developed to provide a standardised, quality-assured method of training Instructors to support the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme. The course is generic – it will be accessed by prospective candidates from the entire range of Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme Courses. This will encourage multidisciplinary working and will reduce the need for instructors on different courses to undertake separate instructor training courses. The course will meet the needs of healthcare providers who wish to teach skills-based courses and will also provide a means of standardising the level of in-service education in maternity care throughout Scotland.

The role of the Instructor

Introduction

The Instructor is a key person in the delivery of the courses comprising the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme.

General

Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme Instructors should:

  • Ensure that they maintain their Instructor status by complying with the recertification guidelines.
  • Adhere to the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure that they are familiar with the Course guidelines and content.

During a course

Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme Instructors should:

  • Attend a meeting of Instructors convened by the Course Leader before the start of the course.
  • Teach from current guidelines relating to the course.
  • Adhere to course guidelines relating to assessment on the course.
  • Provide mentoring as appropriate to candidates on the course.
  • Identify aspects of potential conflict before the course starts to the Course Leader.
  • Notify the Course Leader of concerns as they arise.
  • Attend a final meeting of Instructors to agree the status of candidates.
  • Support Instructor Candidates.
  • Participate in the assessment of Instructor Candidates.

Instructor Recertification

  • Instructors must recertify every 4 years.
  • All relevant elements of the course must be assessed, e.g. lecture, skill station, assessment.
  • The assessment must be carried out by someone with full Instructor status.
  • The assessment may be carried out over a number of courses.
  • An assessment form must be completed for each element of the course.
  • The completed assessment form should be retained by the Instructor and a copy sent to the Programme Administrator by the Course Leader.
  • When all elements of the recertification process have been successfully completed and the paperwork received by the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Group, a certificate confirming the retention of Instructor Status will be issued.
  • Where a recertifying Instructor receives an ‘unsatisfactory’ rating for an element, they should be counselled by the Course Leader regarding the areas for improvement. The recertifying Instructor will then be offered one further attempt at element rated ‘unsatisfactory’. A ‘satisfactory’ rating means that the Instructor will have successfully completed that element of the recertification process. A second ‘unsatisfactory’ rating means that the recertifying Instructor will have to repeat the Generic Instructor Training course and the period of Instructor Candidacy.
