Scottish Maternity REACTS Course

Background

The Scottish Maternity REACTS (Recognition, Evaluation, Assessment, Critical Treatment and Stabilisation) Course has been developed to provide a standardised training course in recognising and managing the critically ill obstetric patient for the many healthcare professionals who participate in the care of pregnant women.  The course has been designed to cover the fundamental aspects of caring for critically ill women and is suitable for most maternity care professionals working in Scotland.  

The Scottish Maternity REACTS Course is one of the skills-based courses developed and rolled out by the SMMD Programme in support of maternity-care professionals across Scotland.

Course Title

Scottish Maternity Recognition, Evaluation, Assessment, Critical Treatment and Stabilisation (REACTS) Course

Course Aim The overall aim of the course is to provide candidates with the supplementary knowledge and skills necessary to help them recognise and deal appropriately with women requiring obstetric critical care and transfer where appropriate. 
Course Learning Outcomes

Candidates will be able to:

• Demonstrate an increased knowledge in the cause and management of the critically ill obstetric women. 
• Demonstrate enhanced competencies/skills in the management of critically ill obstetric women.

 • Develop and enhance early recognition skills and knowledge. 

• Develop increased knowledge in the stabilisation and transfer of critically ill women. 

 

Course Pre-Requisites

It is essential that all have a current Adult ILS certifictation and have a attended a SCOTTIE course within the last 4 years or appropriate alternative (ALSO) or the BASIC life course for pharmacists.

Level one blood transfusion.

Desirable to have IV drug administration competence or working towards completion of competences.

Indicative Content

Care of a woman

  • Undergoing invasive/non-invasive and intensive monitoring
  • With medical, cardiac and respiratory problems
  • With haemotological, hypertensive and haemorrhagic disorders
  • Management of fluid balance and drugs

Assessment Strategy

Multiple choice questions, formative and summative

For Stage 1: Certificate of Attendance 

 Simulated clinical assessment during taught element of the course.

 

For  Stage 2: Certificate of Competence (optional)

Clinical assessments completed at least three times within 6 months following successful completion of Part 2 of the course.

Nominal Study Hours
  • Part 1 - Pre-course work. 30-50 hours depedent on experience
  • Part 2 - 2 day course: 15 hours
  • Part 3 - Individual supervised clinical practice up to 6 months (optional depending on individual requirements)

Minimum Number of Instructors to Participants

1 instructor to 4 candidates (skill stations and workshops).  To comply with the SMMDP quality measures there must be one external trainer included in the faculty each day. 

Course Instructors

Instructors must have completed a Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course or if they have previous appropriate education training experience and are on the SMMDP data base as an instructor. All instructors must comply with the SMMDP Code of Practice for Instructors.
