The Courses - An Introduction

The following courses have been developed by the SMMD Programme to deliver high quality, clinically relevant and accessible courses to all health professionals involved in maternity care provision in Scotland.

The framework of the SMMD Programme and the inidividual courses have been approved by NHS Education Scotland (NES).

This website provides full course descriptors, sample programmes and comments from past candidates.

Course Title Description
Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course The Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course has been developed to provide a standardised, quality assured method of training Instructors to support the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme.
Scottish Generic Instructor Training Bridging Course The Scottish Generic Instructor Training Bridging Course has been developed to introduce already qualified clinical instructors to the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme.
Scottish Neonatal Resuscitation Course A standardised training Course for all healthcare professionals in assessment and resuscitation of the newborn. The Course will meet the needs of healthcare providers who require the ABC of neonatal resuscitation.

Scottish Neonatal Pre-Transport Care Course

This Course was developed as a joint initiative between the Scottish Neonatal Transport Service and the SMMD Programme in response to requests from community maternity units' staff. It covers the knowledge and skills required to assess and care for a baby while waiting for interhospital neonatal transfer. The Course is designed for any professional working in the community maternity unit environment, i.e. midwives, GPs, and Scottish Ambulance Service personnel. It is run by Scottish Neonatal Transport Service personnel with support from the SMMD Programme.
Scottish Routine Examination of the Newborn Course The purpose of this Course is to provide standardised training for all healthcare professionals in the routine examination of the newborn. The Course is developed from the Best Practice Statement produced by NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (2008) available from Healthcare Improvement Scotland and covers all the elements of the newborn examination.

Scottish Normal Labour and Birth Course

This Course has been developed to give professionals in maternity care the opportunity to re-visit labour and childbirth in a manner that strengthens the concept of normality in childbirth: that normal childbirth is a physiological rather than a pathological event. Principles of normality can be applied in a range of core settings.

Scottish Emergency Maternity Care Course for Non-Maternity Professionals

The overall aim of this Course is to provide non-maternity specialist health care staff with the supplementary knowledge and skills necessary to help them deal appropriately with maternity care emergencies.

Scottish Core Obstetrics Teaching and Training in Emergencies Course This Course has been developed to provide a standardised training course in managing emergencies for all health-care professionals who participate in the care of pregnant women. The Course is designed to cover the basic emergency responses that all health-care professionals require.
Scottish Maternity REACTS Course The Scottish Maternity REACTS (Recognition, Evaluation, Assessment, Critical Treatment and Stabilisation) Course has been developed to provide a standardised training course in recognising and managing the critically ill obstetric patient for the many healthcare professionals who participate in the care of pregnant women. The course has been designed to cover the fundamental aspects of caring for critically ill women and is suitable for most maternity care professionals working in Scotland.
Scottish Parent Education Facilitators Course
The Scottish Parent Education Facilitators Course (SPEFC) has been developed is to prepare participants to teach parent education to service users and their families. The course is open to anyone with an interest in teaching parent education.

Timeline Action
12 weeks prior to the Course  Once a suitable venue is secured, key local trainers are commited - as well as any local instructor candidates - and all essential equipment is accesible on the Course date, notify the SMMDP Office of your intention to run a course. 

The SMMDP Office will secure an appropriate external trainer to join the faculty.
8 weeks prior to the Course Notification of local candidates' contact details - names and postal addresses - attending the course should be supplied to the SMMDP Office. 

If additional trainers are required and candidates' places are available, the SMMDP Office will organise for further trainers and offer the available candidate places to all boards in Scotland.

6 weeks prior to the Course

 

Candidates' pre-course learning materials will be despatched. 

All faculty will be confirmed and committed to appropriate lectures, skills stations and assessments.
4 weeks prior to the Course

The faculty support packs will be despatched.

AT THIS TIME - 4 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE COURSE - THERE WILL BE NO EXCHANGE OF CANDIDATES' ATTENDING OR PRE-COURSE LEARNING MATERIALS.

28 days following the Course

All completed forms to be returned to the SMMDP Office including:

  • candidate assessments
  • course evaluations
  • course report.

All faculty expenses will be paid by the SMMDP Office and invoices will be settled by the organising host board.

Where appropriate, all successful candidates will be indexed and their SMMDP Certificate will be despatched with their unique identifier.
